2020 Feast of St Mary Magdalene

The feast of St Mary Magdalene has been very special to me since I was first introduced to this great saint in 2009 with a visit to her Cave of La Sainte-Baume. It was there that I prayed for her intercession, only to receive what I believe to be a ‘miracle’ the next day. I have returned to La Sainte-Baume each summer ever since and began to take pilgrims there in 2013. It has been a great pleasure to devote my time more or less as a Missionary of St Mary Magdalene, to help others get to know her more intimately, for she was the greatest friend of Jesus and is a powerful intercessor for all. 

This year’s July 22nd feast of St Mary Magdalene in Provence will be quieter than usual, due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The locals will have it all to themselves for a change—how blessed are they? I had to cancel all three of this summer’s Mary Magdalene Pilgrimages in Provence. I even had to cancel a September 2020 Mary of Magdala Pilgrimage in the Holy Land.

In January 2020, before Covid-19 reached the United States, the faithful of Lafayette, Louisiana were blessed with Fr Florian Racine’s 3-day Mission, Eucharistic Adoration with St Mary Magdalene, in which he carried the reliquary of the hair of Saint Mary Magdalene all the way from the Basilica in France to the many thousands in the churches of Lafayette and Abbeville.

Hopefully in 2021 all of the restrictions of the Coronavirus pandemic will be behind us and we will once again be able to travel to the South of France and visit the Cave of La Sainte-Baume, where Mary Magdalene spent the last thirty years of her life in prayer and contemplation. And we will be able to travel to the Holy Land to visit Mary Magdalene’s hometown of MAGDALA on the Sea of Galilee. This town of MAGDALA has only recently been unearthed for the first time in 2000 years. I worked at MAGDALA in 2017 as a volunteer, and returned in 2019 leading a private pilgrimage. My heart is definitely in MAGDALA.

The image on this St Mary Magdalene prayer card is a photo of the stained glass window at St Mary Magdalen Church in Abbeville, Louisiana. I don’t know if I have ever seen a more beautiful stained glass window. What is above and to the left of Mary Magdalene is the city of Jerusalem. Where she is kneeling is on Golgotha with Jesus, at the foot of the cross just after the Crucifixion. Notice the shadow on the ground of Jesus on the cross. I made a prayer card with this image and a prayer on the back below.
